Can ceramic tile be recolored?

Q. I am interested in buying a house but don't like the ceramic tile in the foyer and kitchen. It is a light color and I would like it to be darker. Can tile be recolored or only the grout? Tearing it up and replacing is out of budget right now.

A. Unfortunately, ceramic tile cannot be recolored.

Ceramic tile cannot be recolored, but you can often adjust the appearance of the floor or better tie it into your room decor with an adjustment to the grout color. Grout color can be changed using grout stains or color tinted grout sealers. MUCH less than tile replacement, a tile cleaning, adjustment in grout color may secure you at least an improvement.

In most cases the tile is in good condition but the grout is dirty and makes the whole floor look bad. You can clean, recolor and seal the tile grout buy using a quality grout stain colorant.
